#32 Fried Noodle Bento

In the Bento: Fried noodle, mushrooms as eyes, egg and sweet pea. On the side are loquats (枇杷) and a cube of tofu.

Since he has recovered and his appetite has also improved, today I decided to let him try something different. Fried noodle! Verdict of this meal... he ate only the egg, mushrooms, peas and a small mouthful of the noodle. He rejected the loquats, tofu and noodle, all which he has not tried before. Even the tofu which he has eaten before was rejected because all along, I mixed the tofu into his porridge, so to him, this cube of tofu is something new.

How to make him try new food? I read that being afraid of new food is normal toddlers' behaviour and part of their development and we can help them by doing the following..

  1. Eat with your child.
  2. Make positive comments about the food you are eating... even if you hate those peas and cauliflower yourself :P
  3. Praise your toddler when he eats well.
  4. Give small portions.
  5. Don't take away a refused meal and replace it with one which he likes. He will take advantage of this and will not want to try the new food.
  6. Don't offer snacks/milk just before a meal.
  7. Don't assume that because your toddler has refused a certain food, he will never eat it again. Try again after some time.

I'm going to try these steps and hopefully be able to widen the variety of foods he eats and I will be able to cook a wider varieties of food too. Wish me luck!
